palo verde problems

I purchased I think 2/5/22 and planted this foothills palo verde 2/11/22. I'm not quite sure what went wrong here: in the work week where this guy waited for planting it was kept on a cement patio under a shade cloth and I think there was perhaps one day where I brought it inside due to freeze risk.

When planting, I thumped the sides of the nursery pot a bit to loosen things up, tipped it gently onto its side, and then spent about 15 minutes panicking because although the soil was still moist it more or less just sloughed off and left behind what looked like a selection of just the thickest roots. This unfortunately was the first tree I've ever planted so I didn't really know what to do about that. I went ahead and planted it and did my best in the process to fill in dirt while holding the plant so the roots wouldn't be all squashed together.

Over the next couple weeks the leaves shriveled up and died back, which I thought might be okay- maybe the plant putting its energy into root growth. Unfortunately since then it's continued to just look worse.

Is there any hope for this guy or should I be looking into a replacement tree?

Sorry, this is kind of a bummer. Critters are at least making use of it as a perch, like this compost fly.
And this little crab spider.
